    Laptop Hard Drives

    Locked

    by mjohnson ·

I have a Olivetti Echos P-120E Laptop, and my hard drive is slowly dying with bad sectors. I can’t find a hard drive specifically for this laptop anywhere. I read that depending on the connection for the hard drive you should be able to use a standard laptop hard drive and it should work fine. Can any one tell me if this is so, and what I should be looking for when buying a hard drive for the laptop.
    thanks

Got you this link. You should contact them for your HD needs.
Be careful what you buy. Laptops are very picky as to what goes in it.

I have an Olivetti as well. Check out Steve Gibson’s web site for SpinRite. Assuming the drive is not mechanically defective, SpinRite can restore the LL format and recover a good bit of the data (including, perhaps, recovering some of the bad sectors). I cannot say enough good things about spinrite. I have been using it for 15 years! He is at http://www.grc.com/default.htm

The harddrive in your laptop is an IDE drive in a smaller package. The physical dimension of the drive is most important,so remove the hard drive and record it’s dimensions.Goto http://www.procom.com and get the phone number to thier tech support. They should be able to help you further.

When you remove your HDD from the laptop, is the drive also screwed into a frame with a small data cable connector that goes to the HDD and to a male or female connector that actully connects to the inside of your laptop ? If yes then you can use anaked 2.5 in. HDD for a notebook. Try to goto simpletech.com for a replacement HDD for your laptop, they make all kinds of replacements parts for PC.

      Good Luck

Also when you purchase the drive, make sure that your laptop can handle the size(MB) of the drive, other wise you will have problems loading the new OS.

Yes you can use standard labtop hard drives for any labtop. you should look for the speed of the hard drive (how fast you can access it) and the size. If the labtop is for general use a 6-10 gig drive should be plenty to work with. Try to find out if the hard drive has a brand name attached to it that way you know it is quality material.

I would check out Portable Enhancements… http://www.portables.com. He has a great reputation on the comp.sys.laptops. Posters there swear by him.
