Laptop will not run on battery power

By timmedsker ·
I have recently aquired a Compaq Armada M700. It runs on the AC but, will not run on battery power alone. The battery shows that it is charging and does in fact do so. The status lights on the battery show progression too.
Any ideas before this becomes a coaster?

Hello...

Sounds like a used notebook and the battery needs to be replaced. Just because the battery can be charged doesn't mean it will hold enough charge to power the notebook properly.

Question: When you say "... will not run on battery power alone...", what happens?

If it quickly powers off while running on a "fully charged" battery, that indicates a battery that cannot hold a charge.

Please be sure to reply to questions, provide info, and rate the answers you get to your question. Thanks.

Some thing else to check remove the battery and check the contacts some times they get oxidation on them this can cause the problem of not enough curret flow to run on battery.

my suggestion is something with the battery. Perhaps is won't charge up anymore and you may need a new one. Either that or there is a loose connection or something.

Check the maunfactures website see if an updated BIOS is avaliable other than that the battery is probably older than 1 or 2 years and may need replaced

Check to see what type of battery it is. If it is a Ni-Cad it may have acquired a "memory" from recharging too soon after brief usage. NiMH - nickle metal hydride batteries have this problem as well but to a much lesser degree and of course Li-Ions don't have this problem at all. Apossible cureif it is a NiCad is to fully discharge the battery and recharge when nearly empty but frankly there isn't much hope as this works only about 2-3 times out of ten. You might have to do this two or three times but it's cheaper than buying a new battery. If you are buying a new battery try for a NiMH as they are cheaper than the Lithium Ion items. Good luck but I really think you are going to need a new battery for that clunker.

get a new battery

by gordonlu In reply to Laptop will not run on ba ...

hi,there are 2 stps for a battery work cycle. First, the battery need to be charged, second, the battery have to be discharged. you said the status lighs show progression means the battery can be charged. but the laptop can not runs on the battery. so i guess the battery is dead because it can not discharge. you can get a new replacement battery at www.lubattery.com

DO MORE RESEARCH

by tru-tech In reply to get a new battery

My guess, "bad motherboard". I have same/similar issue. The battery is charging but as soon as I unplug it, boom the laptop goes out. The battery is brand new, has been retested (as a new part can have manufacturer defects). Battery is good. Put it in another laptop, charged, held the charge etc. Went back and cleaned the contacts on the laptop it had been in, same results. Hence, most likely a bad motherboard. Something is going wrong when it is being asked to use the battery. It sees it, it's charging it, successfully, the battery is holding the charge, but....the laptop is not taking it. Hum-, well-, I will continue my research. I suggest you do the same.
