LAPTOP WON'T LOAD CDROM DRIVER

by TheChas In reply to LAPTOP WON'T LOAD CDROM D ...

You need to copy the files from your W98 startup disk to the hard drive.

First, make sure that the C: drive is a bootable drive.
If the laptop does not boot from C:
Boot from your startup floppy, and use the command
sys c:

Copy the files from the Startup floppy to the root folder of the C: drive.
There will be 2 files that are already there, DO NOT replace them.

You may need to edit the path statement in the Autoexec.bat file to change the A: path to C:

You now should be able toboot from the hard drive, and run setup on the CD.

Another option, is to copy the Windows CD to your drive.
I do this by installing the drive in a hot-swap bay on my main PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter.

I copy the Windows CD onto a separate partition, and run setup from there.
That way, you never need the Windows CD when a driver or software needs a file from the CD.
