Large Hard Drive on Compaq 4/75 CXL

By ab2hu ·
Hi,
I have a Compaq 4/75 CXL Laptop that has a small hard drive in it. I am trying to upgrade it to a 2.1GB HDD, but the computer will only accept a custom drive of 2931 Cyl. Max. This one is 4,096! How can I do this??? My only idea is some special BIOS or Driver. If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

The best answer would be if Compaq has a BIOS upgrade for this particular machine.
It sounds like this computer has a proprietary BIOS that was designed to support only one particular drive.

Otherwise, it is possible that the drive manufacturer for your new drive has a bios extension that can be written to your Master Boot Record (e.g. Maxtor's MaxBlast or Western Digitals EZ-Drive).

But I would start with Compaq.

Looks like you'll need some sort of drive prep software that you're supposed to use to overcome older bios problems. The drive manufacturer should have something you can download to do that.

OK Thanks, I have emailed the support at compaq but still have no answer. I will check with seagate, I didn't think of that. ab2hu@hotmail.com
