loading win98

By Dmarie ·
Hi,
I have bought another p.c.(secondhand) and have loaded win98 into it. The problem is it doesn't start up with win98, it goes to the win98 start up page for me to choose which mode to start in? Then win98 loads, what have I done wrong, can anyone help, I am an amateur!!
I also was prompted that my token ring adaptor NDS14(0002) was not working properly and was advised to remove it, which I've done. It is an IBM PCI pentium pro 180, 1.6gb and has extended memory of 192mb. Any advise gratefully received!!
Thanks Dawn

Try going into Windows in Safe Mode, then open the Control Panel then System icon and remove the token ring card from the network adapters listing. Shutdown, power the system off for about 2 minutes then power it back up again.

It doesn't like one of the drivers loaded for one of your expansion cards. Take out all cards except video and try reinstalling. after you get it loaded then put each card back in till you find out which card is causing the problem.

I don't know about your token-ring adapter, but that's not causing your problem in starting Windows.

Here's what to do:

Click on Start, Run, type msconfig and press OK. When the program starts, go to the General tab and click the Advanced button. Look for "Show boot menu" or something similar, and uncheck it. Click OK twice, then restart. Windows should start normally.

Insert the Windows 98 startup disk into floppy drive and boot computer, choose the option to start from the command line prompt, answer (Y) to the end of each line

The riser card may need to added to the computer by using the Addd/New Hardware wizard

You may want to check the manufacturer for Bios update

This probably isn't the problem, but I thought I would cover it. When you loaded 98, did you use the 98 boot disk? Did you leave it in there? 98 boot disk comes up asking that very question "what do you want to boot to?". It's probably not your problem, but it is easy to do. ; )
