On a PC running XP on a netware6 network, when the alt/crtl/del logon screen appears and is pressed, it can take 5 mins to bring up the logon screen. Once logged in the network runs fast with no problems.

Any ideas?

I would check to make sure you have the newest novell client installed on your XP machines. Check the novell site. If all else fails, use the built-in novell client in XP. That sounds like mmost likely cause. I would also check the server logs to see if there ae any other issues.

After you upgrade to the latest netware client (do not use MS pitiful version) Remove IPX if installed unless you are on Netware 4x or 5x (you didn't say)
Several other things can cause a slow down.
Make sure SLP is working by typing slpinfo /All at a command prompt.
Delete any network printers that are no longer avaialble
Check registery for old server names or Ip numbers, for example we just changed from the 192.168.x.x to the 10.16.x.x default IP numbers and the logon looks for those old IP numbers and servers first.
clean out your temp files, run a checkdisk, do a defrag, run spybot Search & Destroy 1.4(Updated) adaware personal 1.06 (updated).

The list goes on and on, most of which are not related to netware client.

Been a few years since I even touched a novell network. If the last posters suggestions dont help, you can always set up a packet tracer and see whats going on at that level. May give you a clue.
Sorry Im not more help. But the only novell networks ive managed were small, and set up by me, not inherited. Only problem I ever had was with the MS client being flakey.
