Logical networt equipment location

By flyfshmn ·
Hello all,

I am not a phone guy, but I need to know where you would place a PBX system on the network.

Would it go in front of the firewall or behind? This would be a large PBX system (unsure of VoIP).

Thoughts appreciated - points for valid ones.

Thanks
fly

Usually the Voice Gateway server is in the DMZ.

If you have it on the outside of the firewall, what is going to protect it from intrusion??????

I will tell you as a phone and network guy, leave it behind the firewall. It will reside where all the other servers are. You may want to talk to the net admin about creating VLANs when you go to VOIP in order to prioritize your voice traffic so it will have a higher priority than standard data traffic. (Clear Calls) This is a pretty standard way of handling your call server. If you have remote users needing VOIP just open the correct firewall ports or dedicate a VPN tunnel to them to come in on. Not knowing what type phone system yo are getting, I would suggest Kentrox as the VPN gateways. They actually have a QoS enabled router setup or you may want to look at their other appliances that can provide QoS behind your current routers. Just my 2 cents worth.
