Long distance wireless?

By Daddy123 ·
I work in a school system; tight budget.
Hello all,
We have six schools and an admin building, all attached to our network through ATM service. We have one very small building (a shack) across the parking lot that has no wiring to it, aside from a phone line and electricity. Are there any wireless devices (Access points, antennas boosters, etc.)out there that would travel through a building and across a parking lot?

Thanks
GP

how far is the distance?

If you have wireless at the school, better to use WPA and a MAC filter allow only list to stop any unauthorized access via the wireless. They might be able to see the wireless station but without the key and the right MAC address they won't be able to connect.

you can hide the station from view as well. check your wireless router or access point documentation on how to hide it.

A few questions..
How far is it? : Is there anything around that might interfere with it, now or in the future?

You might be better off going with a medium to large WiFi antenna, with a very high gain. Remember you just don't have to make the signal reach...it has to reach with a pretty good signal strength. The lower the signal strength you get?.the slower the connection.

try this ...

Make sure to get a Wireless access point that you can attach an external antenna to. So, first figure out what antenna meets your need than find an access point what will work with it. Always keep in mind future expandability. Example, if you get a good antenna that, lets say, reaches about 300' radius, with a good signal strength, your investment is safe...in case they decide to add another shack with a computer... :-)
Hope this helps and/or leads you in the right direction.

Have you looked into a directional? Check with Proxim and Cisco to start. You may need to tinker a bit to get the solution you need at a price to budget but it can be done.

There is a multitude of them out there and more coming out every year. There are systems that claim up to 30 miles.

Check out this site. I know that it is a security mag but they are into current technology.

They have an online product directory. Left side of the page, under home. Contact numbers avaible.
