MAC Address uniqueness

By Steelfire ·
Good day

Has anyone come across a broadband 3g card/module that attaches to a workstation where all units have the same MAC address?
As far as I was taught, in a DHCP environment all devices should have a unique MAC as the DHCP server uses this MAC as a factor when allocating an IP??
How does having 500 devices on the same mobile network with the same MAC address impact users of those devices??

Unique MAC Address

by BFilmFan In reply to MAC Address uniqueness

I've only seen that where someone stuck a MAC address into the system's IP configuration and then burned that image out on multiple systems. Usually it's easy to catch, as they will have duplicated the SID as well.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_spoofing on MAC spoofing.

Mac Address Uniqueness

I've seen the problem you've mentioned, this is however not on the workstation\laptop but on the built in 3g module - the mac address on these modules is identical across the board on all laptops. We thought it could be a problem with regards to Spoofing but no. Any module replaced has the problem - something on the 3g module itself?
