Me will not boot

By yinka_lala ·
A friend have a PC with Win98 upgraded to WinMe. She left it for her daughter to play on. On her return there is a message "system integrity has change" on the screen. She chose an option to repair and then shut down the PC. The following morning she tried to open the PC but get the message "Invalid system disk, please insert correct disk...". I've tried the scanreg /restore and fdisk /mbr routine without success. Is there any other way to recover her valuable files?

Try using the Start- in system, boot system, select to run setup without cd rom support,at command prompt type SYS C:,this should transfer the system files to the C:\drive,eject floppy and re-boot

Sounds like something has happened to the system files ... they've been moved/changed/altered/erased. If you have access to another machine, I would insert the bad HD as a secondary/slave HD and try copying the files she needs over to the primary HD on that system. Then FFR the bad HD (fdisk/format/reload) and copy the files back by putting the HD with her files on it as teh secondary/slave HD on her system.

i.e.

(her disk) HR (your disk) YR

primary YR - secondary HR - copy her fiels

FFR HR

primary HR - secondary YR - copy her files back

Hope this helps.

I followed your suggestion but still unable to access C: drive. I have now been advised by my friend to forget the files ( she found old copies on floppy). Although it did not help to solve the problem, I consider your suggestion to be the most likely to work if it was possible. Thanks

how about using the Windows boot disk, boot to safe mode, then use system restore to the day before the problem started.

If soul riders idea doesn't work,
Dave gave you a good idea first off with backing up the data, after that I'ld just try a reinstall of ME. run setup /? to get the switches and try the least intrusive repair you can do. Good luck!
