Memory Low

By bchepete ·
I am using a Gateway E-3400 computer and of late it comes up with a low memory message and freezes. It has 128MB and free disk space is 7.24GB. I have to keep on restarting the machine to continue working.

Memory Low

by HereInOz In reply to Memory Low

What operating system? That would help, as the memory requirements change dramatically for different versions of Windows.

If it is always within the same application, it could be either a corruption in the application, or a virus.

If it is general and not application specific, but occurs any time, it could still be a virus, but if you are running Windows 2000 or XP, then you could try increasing the size of the page file (called swap file in earlier Windows).

Go to system properties (right click My Computer and select Properties, click Advanced, Performance Options, then change the page file to have it at least 350Mb; more if you run a lot of applications open at the same time.

If it is 98/ME, check that it has been set to "Windows manages the swap file size" in the same area.
