Microsoft IAS

By yuemo ·
Hi,

I have two questions about IAS.

Is it a robost RADIUS solution? I know some third part/commerical will be better. We'd like to try EAP on wireless network and possible VPN authentication on IAS. Any concerns and comments?

Another is about the scale of IAS on Windows 2003. It said only support 100 clients on standard edition. I guess here clients referre to NAS device, such as access points, VPN concentrator, etc, not individual users. Am I correct?

Thanks,

-Yuemo

I've been using IAS for 5 years. It is the best solution I've seen. Cisco ACS is absolutely unstable and buggy with lots of security bugs. If you do a vulnerability search on IAS, you'll be hard pressed to find any.

IAS is integrated into Win2003 and the Active Directory integration is seamless. I've had it support thousands of clients with zero issues. The "Standard edition" limitations are how many proxies you can set up, I assure you it's not 100 users limit. It has extremely flexible architecture and you can use two front-end IAS to proxy to multiple independent domains for large enterprises. Management is very easy. I've also used it to connect Cisco VPN concentrators and Nokia checkpoint firewalls seamlessly with Active Directory and it gives you very granular group level management.

I'll be doing a tutorial on IAS here on TechRepublic.
