Microsoft Sound On Packard Bell Sys

By rashidah ·
My question is this:

I attempted to troubleshoot a problem with a Packard Bell, Pentium 100 sytem:
The system's CD audio worked. The Sound Card came with the pre-built system is a combination sound/card modem. the drivers were present, but could not configure microsoft system sound. Reinstalled Windows 98, made sure that the sound card/modem was showing in device manager accompanied by the available resources and indicating that there were no conflicts. At wits end could not get sound.help please

Uninstall sound card.
Try moving sound card to other available PCI slot, then install sound card.

Try removing other PCI cards that are not needed.
If sound works. Add back PCI cards one at a time.
Swap slots if problems arise.

Is it an ISA sound/modem combo? I've worked on plenty of those units. Win95/98 would install partial sound drivers. Is it an MWave sound chip on the combo card? I know, lots of questions. Try going through the Add New Hardware wizard to see if it will detect any other sound devices. If that doesn't work, you may have to force the drivers (if you have the original sound drivers from the sound chip manufacturer)via Add New Hardware, other devices, Have Disk option. The next step would be to, shut down, take the cover off and physically remove the combo card from the system. Then, do a FORMAT on the hard drive and reinstall Win98 clean. Be sure to back up data first. You're gonna have to "play" with it to make it work. Good luck, been there,
Pete
