Microsoft "SP 1 for IE 6.0"

By larryb ·
I have installed the "SP 1 for IE 6.0 " and everything freezes up . I sent an e-mail to Microsoft and all I got was a run around . They were not willing to discuss the matter unless I paid them money .

The big question is , Do I need this patch ?

Have you tried to uninstall it to see if it fixes it? Look in the add remove programs to see if it's in there.

This may be an unpopular opinion in the IT industry, but sometimes the old addage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" may apply. If IE was running fine prior to applying the SP, then perhaps uninstalling the update may be the thing to do. If you cannot uninstall it by conventional means, then select a restore point prior to installing the "fix" and roll-back your computer to that date.

While talk of "security holes" and bugs are rampant, in many cases, these issues may not always apply. I've noticed that many "security fixes" released by MS have been in some obscure area that does not necessarily apply unless you are running a server environment. Many cases, the average desktop does not need all the patches and fixes MS releases.IN summary, if IE 6 is running fine, then no, I would say you don't need the patch. I've not installed the patch myself and IE 6 runs flawlessly.

So, as I stated before, if you didn't encounter any issues prior to installing the patch, remove it by either uninstalling it or running Restore.

Good luck!

If you are / were happy with the older version, you only need the new version once Microsoft stops distributing security updates for the older version.

If you use the internet carefully, and have a good firewall and anti-virus program running, you may not "need" any of the security patches.

If IE continues to give you problems, there are other browsers out there.
I recommend giving Mozilla a try.

The only problem with Mozilla, is that they do not patch the browser, you need to install the full new version for each update.
Beyond that, it is a smaller download, and has some nice built in features.
