Modem won't pick up

By garybarb ·
I have set up RAS on an NT sp5 server. The service is running and the modem is set to send and receive but, the modem will not pick up when I dial in. RAS accts are setup but, I don't get that far. I can dial out. The modem is a Lucent chipset and Ihave downloaded the latest drivers. Any clues what I am missing?

It sounds like your modem is faulty, try a different phone cable. Also check that the modem is correctly configured for nation and phone system ie UK/USA, POTS or PABX. Check the modem is set up to Auto answer. The problem is way before RAS gets involved,

First thing to check is if the autoanswer is enabled. External modems normally have an LED to indicate this. For internal modems, you will have to use the AT command.

If AA is not set, the reason could that the modem has not been enabled as a RASdevice. It has been a while since I did that but somewhere in the RAS setup you are prompted to do so.

If you can dial out, then the modem is probably setup correctly. If it does not answer, then it maybe hardware issue. Best way to test it if it is external modem, is to try it on another Operating System like Win9x. if you have any avail. If it is internal you may install it on another OS like Win9x and try to get a receive diag form the modem properties in Control Panel, Modem, under diagnostics. This will produce all the commands indicating the modem is fully functional. NT cannot do this, that's why I suggested a Win9x machine.
Good Luck!
