    Monitor Colors

    Locked

    by ms04422 ·

I installed Windows 98 on a new hard drive and i can’t get any colors besides 16 colors out of it. I tried using different drivers besides the standard PNP and nothing seems to work. It’s a CTX monitor and I can’t get it to work. Any clues?

The monitor will show the number of colors and color pallette that your monitor supports.
Memory is also a part of how colors are displayed.
The video driver of the video adapter can be updated,by clicking on the display icon in the control panel, click on the settings tab and click on advanced button then click on monitor tab,see if the correct monitor is displayed, change if neccessary.
Click on the adapter tab and see if the device is working properly.
You can try uninstalling the monitor and video card and reinstall.
basically it sounds as though you are using 3x drivers, which donot work well with windows 98.

Forgot the adapter part. Turns out that was some of the problem but not all. I don’t think I can remedy the problem without an upgrade anyhow!

First off it’s not the monitor. It is your video drivers, they are incorrect or Win98 has just plain old VGA drivers installed. Can you give the make and model of the video card as it will help resolve this better for you. Also is the card AGP or PCI? In your bios there may be a option under “PCI PnP setup” “assign IRQ to VGA”. Newer video cards do require a IRQ to be assigned to them for the higher funtions to work correctly. Also if this is a AGP card make sure the you do not have a PCI card in the first slot next to the AGP slot as they sometimes share the same IRQ and some video cards do not like that.

Video Card. Pull your case off and find out the kind of video card. If you have to you may want to right click on the “My Computer” Icon and go into device manager and remove the drivers completely and then reboot or then add the corrrect one’s.

You don’t have the proper video driver loaded. You may have to crack the case and look at the brand and model of your card or watch very closely when you first start your PC and the video card brand and model will flash on the screen just before the BIOS takes over. If it is on-board video then check your motherboard manufacturer. You can set your monitor model to a CTX that comes close to matching yours and be fine.

It may be that the refresh rate for this monitor will not support anything other than 16 colors. Although I have found that not only installing the correct drivers for the monitor but also setting the refresh rate for “optimum” will sometimes do the trick when I want to change the resolution/colors in a monitor.
