    Mouse clicks on moving-lockup

    Locked

    by skennedy10 ·

I have about 10 computers which all of a sudden have started hanging up
and making a clicking noise when moving the mouse. I have 50 more with
the same configuration which, so far, do not have the problem. They have
ATI video cards, 300 PII, 64 Mb RAM.

I was told that this was caused by the video settings being too high.
They have not been changed. Most are at 24bit–nothing higher.

    Any ideas? TIA,

    Susan Kennedy

Try changing the video accelleration rate. You can find it by going into device mgr. clicking on Performance tab, ghaphic button and move the slider to the right. Try adjusting one step at a time to find the right setting.

I think you meant slide to left (lower). This helped and I think is the usual cure, but we had not changed anything from when there was no problem. I think the VShield was part of the problem as we had just changed to 4069 when this started happening–until then all was OK. Seems fixed when I changed to 4072. Thanks!

definetly go into control panel, system, device managers, and then performance tab.. go to bottom select graphics tab lower the hardware acceleration down 1 notch.. there are a total of 4 notches!! usually this will fixc…. if not then lower the color resolution to 16 bit… if that doesn do it.. try a easier resolution.. i.e. if u are using 1024 X 768 try 800 X 600 that shouldnt make a diff but worth a try anyways.. also check refresh rate , lower that as well..

last i would find thelatest drivers on the net… and load them

      good luck

I get the same symptoms, on occasion, when a system locks, or an application stops responding. What you’re hearing is the input buffer telling you that it’s full and will not take more input until the system frees up and begins processing the inputalready in the buffer.

Something is hanging your sys, and it’s going to be hard to tell what it is, because cntrl-alt-delete will give you the same buffer clicks. Other than that, I have no idea what you might have to do to fix it. In my case, it’s been everything from the video settings to which version of VShield the user had installed.

Also could be worth looking at the IRQ settings, A shared IRQ between the mouse and NIC or Modem has haunted me in the past with the same symptoms

We had not changed anything from when there was no problem. I think the VShield was part of the problem as we had just changed to 4069 when this started happening–until then all was OK. The update of McAfee to 4.72 did the trick. Thanks!

      Susan,
I’m assuming that the 10 pc’s didn’t start doing this at the same time. If they are networked, or if you are otherwise sharing files between them, they may have inherited a virus. Viruses can corrupt the executables.

      SECOND POSSIBLE SOURCE
The only other thing that I can think of is to check the 10 machines for a single common program (recently installed) that is not installed on the other 50 machines.

WHY THIS CAN BE A PROBLEM
When installing a new program, dll’s and vxd’s are copied to the system directory. These copied files may overwrite older versions of the system files. Programs written with the older version of the dll may not work with the newer version.

      SOLUTION?
      I suggest the following:
Scan with the most up-to-date virus definitions available from your anti-virus provider.
If that doesn’t solve your problem, obtain the latest version of your mouse driver and the latest version of your video driver.
Load one of the problem machines with the mouse driver.
      Load one

The problem I think was the McAfee DAT 4069. That was the only thing changed on these computers just before the situation started–yes, all 10 at once! Network is only for printing. Thanks!

The first thing you have to do is be a good detective. Find out what happened to these ten computers just before the problem started.
I suspect a resource conflict with your mouse. Remove all of the cards from your computer that you can and see if the click goes away. If it does, add the cards back one at a time to pin down the offender.
You might also take a look in cmos to see if someone has set “setup defaults”. This could create a conflict with one of your add on cards.
