Mouse heats up and locks

By rhshanklin ·
I hope I can describe this problem correctly. I work in a small college and we have a lab with 30 PIII 500 Compaq deskpros with Intellipoint wheel mouses. During any given week I usually have about 2-5 machines that lock up. I get no keyboard response and no mouse response. Now to the strange point. On the locked up machines the mouse actually feels physically warm. After I do the dreaded power of/power on, the machine works fine and the mouse cools down. I wasn't even aware that a mousecould heat up. Any help into what could be causing this, or suggestions to correct it would be greatly appreciated.

Mouse heats up and locks

We had 30 new computers installed in our school computer lab last January. Over the next few weeks we experienced the same problems with 5 intellipoint wheel mice. As the machines were under warranty, I contacted the local supplier and was told that they were aware of the problem with the mice (defective devices) and all 30 mice were immediately replaced (same model but a different "batch" I guess). Since the replacement, we have not had another such problem. Hope this helps.

Another problem could be that you may be having a cpu fan problem, that could be causing the mouse and machines to lock-up,the heat has to be generated from somewhere other than the mouse.Check all fans to make sure that they are operating properly.

I would contact the vender first, a mouse should not heat up. It could be a miswired mainboard, allowing to much current back to the mouse. Try using a generic mouse.
