Mouse seems to be working badly ...

By mzy ·
I have a laptop with me, and I currently use a mouse with a P/S 2 port for my laptop. Recently, my mouse seems to be running about all over the place, and sometimes it just dissappears. On other occasions, my mouse will not even respond to my moves! Is there a problem with the CMOS or anything?
Please HELP me!!!!!

Here's a couple of ideas to try:

o Open up the mouse, remove the ball (insert your favorite joke here :) ), and check the rollers - it may be dirty. Clean the stuff off of the two rollers, and try to clean the ball (insert more joke here). **** out any lint or dust in the mouse and reassemble.

o If that doesn't work, check your control panel on the mouse settings. Look at some of the settings to enhance the mouse visibility or movements.

If you have an old 3-button mouse with a switch underneath to switch between DOS and MS mode, check that the switch is set to MS (2-button) mode.

*Assuming you're running Win98*
This is sounding to me not like a mouse HW issue, but a OS issue...you might try to clear and optimize your resources.

you can start by clearing the startup menu:
1. Start | Run...type MSCONFIG

2. click on the"Startup" tab

3. clear out everything except for 2 items (for troubleshooting purposes)
-Scan Registry
-System Tray

After you reboot, you shouldn't have a problem, but you can also try the basics like:
-Scandisk/defrag
-clear Temp files
-Scan for Corrupted files with SFC

(in case you don't know)
1. START | RUN...type SFC
2. choose to scan for altered files

hope this helps,
Joel

PS. if this stuff don't work, replace the mouse

Try to replace your mouse.drv, if you have already tried to replace the mouse. Your driver might be corrupt.

I'll agree with answer #1. As a mouse is used it picks up "stuff" from the work environment. This will build up on the rollers which the ball moves against and cause the arrow to jump erratically. I usually use a pen knife to scrape off the residue so the rollers have no bumps and this usually corrects the problem.
