Moving AD + Exchange 2003 to new Hardware

by iainwrig . Updated 19 years, 1 month ago

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and reply!

I would like to move Active Directory and Exchange 2003 ENT to a brand new server, brand new hardware. Both servers are running Win Server 2003 Standard.

Through reading i found some advice saying it could be done by doing this:

1. Create new DC
2. Join to domain
3. DCPROMO , Replicate
4. Use Exchange recovery when installing on new server, and import all of old mailboxes.

I would really like to keep the same server name at the end of the process. The server is used by 50 users and i really want to avoid joining 50 users to a new domain and moving profile/desktop settings, and changing everyones outlook exchange server address.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

I was thinking of using this method, then renaming the DC when the migration is complete, which seems like a very … bad practice and probably will not go over well.

Thanks again –

Iain Wright
