Moving Exchange into exisiting network

By Computer Geek ·
We have a merge happening where we will need to bring in an Exchange server into our existing network that does not use Exchange. There are not many mailboxes there, but not being that familar with Exchange 2000, I'm looking for resources on making sure the move is smooth. Once they are inside our network what needs to be done to ensure delivery of service? Our existing network is Windows 2003 on AD. We have a firewall but no room (no more available IP addresses in our DMZ). I'm not sure how to have the Exchange server communicate with the outside world.

Is the current Exchange environment moving to the new AD forest or just one Excahnge server?

You will also have to have an open IP to allow for a SMTP connector to the outside world for the MX record.

My advise is to hire an Excahnge architect to develop a migration plan.

Exchange is associated with the Active Directory forest and not a single domain. Is this a single domain AD forest?

If your AD forest is already in existence, you will most likely need to either:

Re-implement Exchange in your forest.

- OR -

Implement Exchange in your forest with your current AD settings and then create a SMTP virtual domain.

- OR -

Upgrade the existing domain to Windows 2003 and then create a forest trust and assoicate user accounts permissions with thsi forest. Note that you will need Microsoft Identity Integration Server (which is insanely expensive -- on the order of $25,000 per processor) to get this plan to work.

Again, I highly encourage you to hire a seasoned Exchange architect as this is NOT a project that will be successfully implemented by a beginner or immediate Exchange administrator.

well if your adding in a new exchange where one previously wasn't, it's pretty straight foward. Add the box to the network as a member server, add exchange to the member server and let it run. It should extend the AD schema to include exchange required schema objects.

the hard part is getting existing user accounts into exchange that is if your going to use exchange as an SMTP server and not a POP3.

It's an exisitng exchange server on one domain, and the entire domain will be imported into our existing network. Obviously, we'll be needing to do some DNS work, but I was wondering how Exchange will be affected.
