MS Messenger again?

By jrbigsky ·
Ms Messenger win XP home

I have MSN messenger turned off in win XP .....but I keep getting a pop up ad from MSN that reads in the top pop up line .." Messenger Service"
in the start of the ad there is who it is from with a IP address then the ad which is mostly about porn or something close like dating..
Where is this coming from and how can I stop it?

I have gone into my computer /manage/service and then change'd messenger to "disabled" but I am still getting pop up coming in I have even tried to diable messenger in registry but it won't let me...getting really tired of this any help out there?

You need to disable the Messenger service in Services. Right click My Computer, select Manage. Expand Services and Applications, select Services. Right click on Messenger and select Properties. You will then be able to adjust settings.

Ok, these advertisements you are seeing are coming from a new application that sends them over TCP port 135, the RPC port. Normal NET SEND messages (which uses the Messenger service) use TCP port 139.
Go to this web page and read up about what is happening:

The best solution is to run a personal firewall. YOu can get ZoneAlarm for free. It is good, in my opinion.

hope this helps
