MSDE as database server?

By kbrown ·
I am not too terribly experienced in Access development, but I have a desire to learn more. I read an article from TechRepublic that mentioned using MSDE as a Database server. Can anyone point me in the direction of some information on how I might accomplish such a feat on a peer-to-peer LAN? Or, is it not even possible? All the information I have run into so far leads me to believe I need Windows 2000, an SQL Server and to sign my soul over to Bill Gates himself to get this done.

Betteryet, what will using MSDE as a database server accomplish exactly? what can be done with it?

Article Reference: "MSDE: The engine that can" <http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?id=r00219990713eje03.htm>

MSDE as database server?

I tried to access the reference article but it stated it could not be retrieve, so I don't know what exactly TechRepublic stated. What I can tell you is what I think about your situation and MSDE. MSDE is Microsofts core database engine with none of the GUI stuff stuck in. If you wanted to use MSDE as a database server over a LAN you could easily do so by putting the MSDE on a network drive that all your LAN users could access. Then you would develop a front end GUI to sit on each of the individuals PC. By utilizing ADO you could interact with the MSDE. This solution has drawbacks, versus your other senerio of running SQL Server. Putting the MDSE on a shared LAN drive impacts performace due to network traffic, you also do not get the robustness of SQL Server. However if your application only has a few concurrent users and you do not currently have SQL Server available I would use the MDSE located on a shared LAN drive.

Good Luck

Thanks for the quick response. Don't spend all those points in one place.
