Multiple cd burners

Multiple CD burners
Having found myself with several, now redundant CD burners i find myself ooking for a use for them.
As i do a lot of audio backups, having six mobile Disco's on the road i am considering building a standalone mutiple burner but havent the faintest idea as to how to start!
The project alone will be an enjoyable challenge and learning task.
Can anyone help with info or a point in the right direction as to where i might find out more about this please
Yours in anticipation
Pete

Pete,

As far as I know, you cannot burn to multiple CDs simultaneously in a standard PC configuration.

The commercial multi-CD burners use custom hardware, firmware, and software to accomplish what you desire to do.

First, ALL drives need to be matched.

Then, ALL drives need their own controller.

Finally, you would need custom software that would handle burning to multiple drives.

Just thought of 1 potential way to make this work.

Use a back-plane style server / industrial PC with single board computers as your base.

Install dual processor cards until you had as many as you needed. You will need at least a 2GB hard drive or RAM drive for each processor.

Install a single processor card as the "master".

You would need to mount the drives in a separate chassis.

Set up the system so that the master card controls all the other CPUs.
Then read and send the source disk from the master to the burners and tell them to burn the image.

Lots of details to work out, but it would be workable.

Keep in mind that with multiple burners running at the same time the power supply needs will increase.

For a safety margin, plan on adding an extra 50 Watts of power supply capacity per extra burner.

your in luck you can actually use a normal spare pc and buy an external drive box. They have these in 4/8/10 etc.. They will support your power needs. Then get yourself a copy of Alcohol 120 or Nero. Both of these systems will allow you to burn to multiple burners. There are other ways of doing this as well, several manufacturer?s make add-on cards that will allow you to hook up 8 drives or more to it and then use them as spars. The thing you will need to look at is either a good raid card "Doesn?t have to be SCSI" or a Drive storage array. I personally use a IDE raid card to run 8 burners off of alcohol 120 in the same sort of config and it works fine as well as all my drives are different types and speeds.
