My cd burner won't work and I need help.

By Mano ·
My burner is recognized by windows(9 and the bios but when I put a cd in it and try to access it I always get an error that the drive is inaccessable. There are no conflicts on my computer and if I use my cdrom drive, I can view the contents of the disc with no problem.
I would appreciate if someone could help me as soon as possible.
Thanks for your time and hopefully help.

Some additional information would be helpful, as what brand/model of CD-R(W) do you have, what brand/kind of media are you trying to use?

Also, there is a common software package from Adaptec (EZ CD Creator) that is commonly used with CD burners. Do you have that installed on your system? If so, which version?

If you know how to set up a CDROM drive in DOS, try that. See if you can at least access data on the drive. If you can't, then you likely have bad hardware (quite common). Call the manufacturer for an exchange, or take it to the store you bought it from.

If you can't set it up in dos, just call the manufacturer up. They will likely try to troubleshoot the problem with you and will either fix it, or have you send it back. I hope this helps.

The wording in your question seems to indicate that you have another cd-rom drive. Having not specified I will assume that it is not a "R" or "RW" (the other drive) drive. You stated you can "view the contents of the disk with no problem" in the other drive.

Without being more specific,as concerns the type of media you are using I can't say for sure that you do not have a media compatibility problem. I can say that if the drive cannot read the media in it, it will give this error. Please note that all media (CD-Rom disk's)are not compatible with all drives, especially older drives and even more so older "R" and "RW" drives. This goes to the extent that many "R" disks are not readable in "RW" drives and vise versa. Check to see if you have a media issue first if you have not done that already.

A hardware problem is possible, also software is a possible problem, the advice provided in the other answers is about as good as I can give, considering the description of your problem is not specific enough. Don't forget that the manifacturer is a good source of help (free help), especially if the drive is still under warranty.

First, and don't be offended, try installing the drivers that came with the drive. Then try updated drivers.

Second, check the Master/Slave jumpers on the back of the cd-rw, and make sure that you have those set up porperly (try to keep ATAPI drives on 2ndary IDE, HDD's on primary)so that there is only one master and one slave on each bus.

Troubleshooting is a process of elimination start with the easiest thing first, check the media it's not all compatible. Check to see if you can access it from dos (dos driver necessary).

Windows should detect the cd without the use of a dos driver. If it is not a media problem and you can not access it from dos then it is likely a hardware problem. If you can read a disk from dos then it is probably a software related problem or a application problem. Try re-installing the set up software that came with the unit, (i am assuming that it was installed to start with.) The adaptec cd creator software is excellent.

If you tare into the computer be sure to check if the master slave shunt jumpers are set correctly. If the unit in question is on the same data cable as another eide (ata) device then one is set to slave and one master. If however it is alone on it's own cable then it must not be set as a slave, it should either be set to master or stand alone, check the documentation that came with the drive for that spec.

You say that windows recgonizes it therefore I assume it has assigned it a drive letter. Without being more specific I can't help you much more, but if windows sees it with no problem it leads me to suspect it's either media related or hardware rlated. I once saw a hardware problem where the sensor in the cd unit failed to tell the computer that there was a disk in it, look for the light on the cd to activate. Some cd r's and rw's
do ot work well with DMA. Un check the DMA box in the units property sheet (go to controll panel-> system->device mgr->open the cd rom catigory-> select the unit in question->right click and choose "proprities" under the settings tab you will see the DMA box, try removing the check. Try swapping out the unit with another.

If all else fails and the thing is under warrantee call the manifacturer. Please forgive my spelling. Good luck.

Don't mean to offend but are you sure you are attempting to access the correct drive. I have seen numerous instances where the burner becomes d: and the CD ROM becomes e:
