My laptop’s Hard drive crashed

by nicsensei . Updated 15 years, 10 months ago

I’ve had a toshiba satellite p15-s479 for a little over a year and a half now, and I have some real problems. First off, about 2 weeks after my warranty expired, my cd drive crashed and no longer works. To replace it, I bought a sony dual layer usb external dvd burner (DRX710UL)

Now, more recently, my hard drive crashed. I bought a new one online, now here is my problem:

I set bios up to boot the sony usb disk drive with my laptop’s recovery disk in it, and it starts to work fine (shows windows 98 loading) and then very quickly it says drivers not found, and goes on to say “no cd/net”…

So now I need to somehow get generic cd/rom drivers for my external USB cd rom drive. I also have an enclosure that I can put my laptop’s hard drive in (and successfully hook it up to another computer) and I have tried to install my recovery disk on to the hard drive (as a usb mass storage device) but the recovery disk will not work in different computers. I really just want to use my recovery disk to install windows again. My laptop supports booting from USB devices, and I have no floppy drive. Any help will be very appreciated.
