You haven't been using the Safely Remove Option

by OH Smeg In reply to my portable hard disk is ...

In your OS and the Partition Tables have been corrupted here.

If the Data is Important here do not mess with this drive pack it up and send it to a Data Recovery Specialist it will be cheaper to recover with the best chance of a full recovery. However if it would only be Nice to recover the data:-

A possible solution here if you are using some form of Windows is to run CHKDSK/R on your external HDD and see if that repairs the unit.

If you are not using some form of Windows or the check Disc option didn't work you'll need to try one of the many Data Recovery Applications available but you need to realize that if you have to get the data back the more that you do now the more that's it's going to cost when you take the drive to a Professional Data Recovery Specialist and the less likely that you will get all of the data recovered if they can recover any at all.

Here is a short list of the better Data Recovery Applications but it is by no means a complete list of all the available software.

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.
