Well I would suggest starting off with testing the drive

With it's makers Testing Utility which can be downloaded here it's called Data Lifeguard for DOS

Failing that you can use the Ultimate Boot CD to test the Drive though it may not have your WD Drive Testing Utility though the Seatools Utility should work OK.

With the UBCD just remember to download the ISO File not click on the add for a similar sounding product. The UBCD is free so if you are asked to pay for it you have clicked on the wrong thing.

The proper way to test a HDD is to test it int he computer and then if it fails the test remove it fit to another system and retest.

If it passes the second test the M'Board, Power Supply of Data Lead is damaged and needs replacing and if it fails the second test the Drive is on it's way to Silicon Heaven and should be replaced before there is any data loss.
