I am having MySQL visited upon albeit for a trial. I've used a lot of databases in the past but not this one.

Trawling through the internet shows everything from a base version (which appears to use command line instructions) to additional tools and interfaces which cost money (for a small trial software).

Does anyone have any experience or can point me in the direction of MySQL documentation which presumes I don't know what I'm doing!!

If you just want to test MySQL under Windows, go to and download XAMPP for Windows which includes MySQL 5.0, among other applications.

You can administer MySQL using the MySQL Administrator which is part of MySQL GUI Tools Bundle for 5.0, from

You can download the MySQL Reference Manual from in several formats, including PDF, or you can browse the manual online.

The MySQL website has numerous articles and also forums. You do not have to spend a cent to get fully acquainted with the product.

If you want to see a simple application, I have a few lines of PHP code utilizing MySQL available from
