I have an older asus motherboard, worked fine until i installed a new cablemodem, then for no reason the system will drop the graphics and there will be no image on the monitor, at the same instant the HDD will power down, i thought it was the powermanagement features so i made sure it was disabled in the bios and the O/S, still the same problem, there is power going to the MB as the powersupply fan is running and the cpu fan, as of last night when i turn the PC on the power lights come on the fan to the cpu and power supply come on but there is no Image on the screen, i tried 2 other video cards, same result........no post beeps, nothing, if i leave it for a few days powered off it will come on, but after a few hours the above symptoms will (poof) reappear like magic, i have cleaned every contact, reseated every card, pulled the MB out of the case and placed it on a cardboard box, still does the same things. ............i have my doubts that anyone could figure this out, but ithought it couldnt hurt to post it here as i'am lost on this one.

Providing more info on the system type would have been more helpful,if you say old motherboard then it may be that you have a PII or earlier thus the Power Supply may not provide the necessary powwer to run the system depending on the other peripherals that you have installed,so check the power supply voltage.
The last option would be to consider that it is a intermittent problem

Since everything was fine until that pesky cable modem was installed, disconnect the cable modem and see if the problem goes away. [what cable modem connection? USB? NIC?]

ASUS MB with a Pentium 2 350, 1 AGP x2, 3 dim sockets, 4 PCI sockets, 2 ISA sockets, disconnected the Cablemodem a week ago, still no go, brand new memory chips installed (twice)
3 Different video cards including AGP and PCI type, PC worked like atop for 2 years, i cleared the CMOS several times, still no go, my best guess is a heat fracture on the MB??? or do power supplies get funky like this?

Ken,
You state that you cleared CMOS several times. I presume you used the jumper to do so. Have you tried removing the battery and reinstalling it after 30 seconds or so? I have a board at home that had similar problem that this ended up being the cure for.
