I have a small home LAN and a couple Win98SE boxes that can use the same phone
line for DUN. One box works fine – can surf for prolonged time without flaw and
stays connected even without activity. The other box has problems:
During a dial-upsession, the modem establishes a connection with my ISP
(actually, at two different numbers), verifies my username and password then
minimizes to SYSTRAY. The SYSTRAY icon indicates some activity (virual ‘lights’)
and I notice packets received and sent numbers DO increase. I can typically open
MSIE 5.5 or ICQ and successfully load a web page or two. Subsequent attempts
eventually yield an ‘Error loading page’ message and I notice there is not DUN
activity anymore. If I use PCAnyhwere to connect to a remote host PC, my
connection stays live until manually closed. I have uninstalled DUN and
reinstalled, even per MS Tech instructions. I have manually set the DNS primary and secondary per my ISP to no
avail. I have reduced my modem transmission rate well below the maximum with no
change. I have finally attached an external modem to another COM port and the
same thing happened. I don’t think it’s the modem or phone line, so what in my
OS or DUN settings cancause this??
