NAS

I need some good documentation on how to setup and configure a NAS device. We are wanting to purchase one to act as our file server. I do not have much background with this type of technology and would like to read up on it and see if it is something I could configure. Also, if anyone has set one up I would like some feedback on how hard it was to setup and how hard it is to maintain.

Thanks!

Depending on what hardware vendor's equipment you purchase, it could be easy or difficult. Generally, you attach it to the network, power it up, use the console interface to assign it an IP address, and then use the browser-interface to set it up.

If you can handle installing Windows 2000 on a server, you can handle it.

Some documentation suggestions:

http://www.pcquest.com/content/handson/103101101.asp

http://nas.darma.com/support/nas%5Fmanual/

http://bg.broadcastengineering.com/ar/broadcasting_san_nas_practical/

http://www.intel.com/design/network/solutions/nas/index.htm

On that Intel link, don't overlook the "Solutions Quick Links" box (on the right) with additional links to further documentation.

Good luck.

Very easy to setup and maintain. I am using a Maxtor NAS 4100 and would suggest a different solution. This is a brutally slow file server solution.
