Need advice on file sharing on a network

By obener ·
hi everyone,

there are at least 6 computers on our network and all the data that is stored in a windows xp computer. I wanted to limit people access different kind of folders. I was thinking that i could create users on the windows xp computer where the files are and limit them by permissions on advanced file sharing, or get a windows server 2008 and implement a server and usernames and so on? Is it possible to help me which would be a better choice also some reasons with it? At the moment everyone can access the files on the computers as there is no username or password set, also other peoples emails are read. I want to be able to set the whole thing up in a way that only that user can access what they are allowed (files, folders, programs, functions) as i was also thinking of implementing etokens or smartcards for ease of user authentication and grant access to what they are allowed.

thanks for looking
