need help to mirror 2 drives

By dakid ·
hello it experts!

I recently added a pci raid card to my pc to mirror two 80 gig hard drives. I am new at this, can someone explain the setup or guide me where i can find an easy illustration for this (a setup shown w/ pictures would be nice). My current OS is Win XP Pro SP/2. So I DO NOT want to mess this up since I got alot of important files currently on hard drive.

ah, well, I would recommend that you backup everything before you try anything.

Using a PCI type of RAID card [assume its something like an Adaptec/Promise IDE], the first thing you need to understand is that you have to create an array of drives using the controller card software. Second, in creating the array, you'll lose data on the drives as the array of drives must be formated [regardless of using RAID 0 striped or RAID 1 Mirrored]. Windows sees RAID arrays as mass storage devices [SCSI]. Therfore the boot sequence in the computer BIOS must be changed from boot HDD [IDE controller] to boot SCSI[SCSI or RAID controller].

here is some links what explain you how is work the mirroring. For your problem, you need to see the documentation of your raid controller. (there are no universal techniqe for configuring the desired raid array)
