    NetWare Server Hangs/Email copying slow

    One of the sites I support is having problems copying from their Inbox to their Personal Folders in Outlook – it’s very slow. For example, an email message with a 4MB attachment used to take about ten seconds to copy from the Inbox to a Personal Folder. Now, it can take up to five minutes or more.

    The email support team says that they cannot find anything wrong on their end.

    We turned on “Client File Caching Enabled” on the local server, and “File Caching” on the clients. This fixed the email slowness problem, but a new problem started.
    A few days after turning on “Client File Caching Enabled” on the local server the server would hang. The processor utilization would jump up to 65% and just sit there. Users couldn’t login, or if they were already logged in they couldn’t access mapped drives. We would have to do a hard reset of the server (nothing else seemed to work).
    After the reboot, the server could run fine again for days (3 days, 7 days, 10 days it didn’t matter – it was random), and then it would happen again. We can’t seem to find any common situation that causes the hang.

    We turned off “Client File Caching Enabled” and the server problems went away, but the slow email problems came back.

    GENERAL INFORMATION:
    Exchange servers are located in another city (at HQ) and this is where the users’ Inbox are kept too;
    Personal Folders are kept on each local server;
    Nothing else seems to be affected (copying files from server to server, Internet etc? are all fast);
    Users are using Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003 (same problem in both);
    NetWare 5.1 (with Support Pack 6);
    Novell Client for Windows v4.83 SP1

    Any help would be greatly appreciated !!
