environmental effects

On Ethernet Cat 5 UTP should go 100m - barring environmental effects - any EMI, RFI etc in the area? High temp/humidity?
Is this UTP or STP - STP should do better - due to the shielding...
Is the cable genuine , new, and in good condition? How are you terminating cables?

If you have a cable tester

Test the 40 Foot Cable.

If you don't have access to a Cable Tester replace the Lead.

I'm betting that the lead is faulty or if it is an internal one inside walls the places where it ends are not correctly connected.
