Network disconnecting at will

By jon_w31 ·
Win ME on laptop and desktop. Systems linked via crossover cable and networked usinf network setup wizard.
The network worked fine. Internet connection sharing also working ok.
problem is after a period of time the network disconects for no apparant reason? This happens about 3 times a day. Restarting the laptop reconects the network?
Poer saving features are turned off on both machines. Is there a default time out on the win me network settings if so how would i change this.
If not anysugestions would be appreciated
Thanks

Possibilities:

1. Connections are not Cat5. Wire may not be Cat5, connector may be bad, etc.

2. Auto-negotiate default settings for some cards don't always work right. Manually set the speed for the cards.

You may want to check and make sure at least the PC has a properly grounded power receptacle. I've found strange problems which were corrected (especially intermitent networking probs.) by this. You can get a cheap tester ($4) from a hardware store.
