Network Load Balancing/CLB & App Center

By tomhass ·
We have used NLB to load balanced 2 Win2003 COM+ Application servers in the past but the setup was difficult and it did not work very well at all (traffic favoured 1 server heavily).

I have already seen why this is - COM+ design not suited to NLB.

Okay - need alternative - after NLB problems and poor documentation, not sure if:-

1. Whether Application Center is suited to job
2. If docs are as poor as NLB it worries me - haven't got months to try out various scenarios

Another alternative may be hardware application switch instead - but do not know if these work with COM+.

Anyone had to tackle this yet - how to you approach/fix ?

Thanks

Tom

Use a load balancing switch. Hardware does a better job of load balancing than Microsoft software.

Thanks BFilmFan but you are not telling me anything I don't know - I said in the question I was considering h/w switching but need details on if and how working with COM+.

most effective , easiest and fastest method , I beleive is using a layer 3/4 3Com or Cisco switch . Good documentation and solid output .
Transcend or ciscoworks also help a lot ...

Thanks but as per BFilmFan I already know potential for h/w switching - need some real world config info.

tomhass you rejected both answers and later tried to tempt with more points .yet nobody taking it . MY ANSWER IS forget about points or else ... try if you can accept the idea of load balancing through your LAN switch . more than %90 of the community use hardware to do load balancing .

I am already inf favour of Hardware Load Balancing...just need reassurance this will work with COM+/.NET servers (i.e. NOT using web servers).
