I have recentlty aqcuired responsiblity of a small network on an offshore oilrig. I’m not completely illiterate but still learning about all the stuff and hope that someone can answer some of my stupid questions:
The network consists of approx 50 desktop users, plus several private laptops which connects mostly via wifi. We have a 256kbps link to the outside world via satellite.
The main servers runs MS Win 2003 Server and most users run MS Win XP Pro.
1.During a routine excericse to create an inventory of all the machines, I found that there are several machines which are in fact on ghe network, but I’m unbable to ping. I used a prgram called “Look@Lan”.
2. I also discovered some names for machines on the network (using Look@Lan) which I don’t know how to locate physically.
3. The private laptops connect mostly via wifi. I find that I can pick some up using Look@Lan and some not. I also noted that when looking at the DHCP Address leases, I don’t see some machines which I know are definitely present.
4. Since our bandwidth to the outside world is somewhat limited, we’d like to monitor and control the use. How can I track down a user who is hogging the bandwdth ?
5. I’d also like some info on “bandwidth hungry” applications, for example, what effect does things like Messenger, Skype etc have ?
6. Finally: One of our managers received threat-mail from a yahoo sender. We think it originated right here on board. Is it possible to trace where such an item came from ?
I think this is quite a mouthfull. If anyone has got any adivice / comments / questions, I’d like to hear from you.
