The first things to check are the network settings

by Deadly Ernest In reply to network not pinging

Starting with the server, make sure the network settings on the systems concerned are set up right. Oh first check the server is actually connected to the network with a good and functioning cable through a socket that's connected to the right router etc at the other end - ie make sure it's actually on the network and turned on.

1. Using the same actual logical network and network mask.

If using network 10.x.x.x and the mask is set for it will only seek systems with 10.0.0.x addresses.

2. Check the DHCP is set up properly so each machine knows where to look and the server has the correct address - most network wide errors a re due to an incorrect setting on the server.

3. Check the systems are set up to allow an echo request. That is the system has policy permitting it to respond when pinged, some systems are set NOT to allow this.

After that it's a case of running a number of checks and evaluating the answers.
