Network Printer Naming Convention

By randy ·
We're kicking around ideas for naming approximately 80 networked printers spread over five floors of a single building. Roughly seven different HP models. Any good ideas that have worked well for others out there who support and maintain a high volume printers? Thanks!

Here is what I use:
HP4550CM11 which translate to
MFG (HP) Model(4500) Type(color) Division Marketing)Floor (1) Printer (1)(Marketing Users Default)
So If I had a second 4550 on that floor it would be HP4550CM12.
I also use the comments and desc for management purposes.
I also use a software called Print Queue Manager
www.softwareshelf.com/products/queue.asp
Hope that helps

You may also squeeze a jack number in there, if your running a sniffer on the network, having it that granular will save TONS of time when your having problems.

We use the following format, which tied in to our IP Addressing scheme which makes it easy to identify and setup printers.

XXXPRNxx

XXX=First Three Letters of Site Name, eg LON for London
xx= Unique Sequential Number

IP Address is then 10.2.0.2x where x is the printer number eg LONPRN01 would be 10.2.0.21, LONPRN10 would be 10.2.0.30
