Network Printing from 95 but not NT

    by wbs_aus ·

I have a HP Deskjet 500C printer on a token ring network. The printer will print from Windows 95 machines but not Windows NT machines. I have deleted and readded the printer and the drivers on our print server. The Jetdirect card and network cable were also replaced. What could be the problem?

    Regards,
    Wayne

      hello wayne,

My guess is that your printer isn’t supported by Windows NT. To be sure you should check Microsoft’s HCL at http://www.microsoft.com/hcl.
      Maybe this would help you

I had a similiar problem. you can call Microsoft(I know it’s not fun) and they will tell you which printer to load in NT. Like it migt work fine with a 525c driver or something.

I had this problem myself. Unfortunately the 500c is not supported by Win NT, and HP does not even have an updated driver or patch to help. You could try another printer’s drivers, or even call Microsoft, but don’t hold your breath….

      2 things
      – make sure the jetdirect card isn’t set for bidirectional support for the printer
      – try the HP 550c driver from your NT CD-ROM. This is HPs baseline driver for most of the deskjet series

The 500C is not and can not be made compatible with NT. It was designed and built as a strictly Win95 Printer. It uses a propriety driver which requires direct access to the hardware and NT prohibits such drivers from running. Sorry, but the onlyanswer is to replace the printer if you must print to it from NT.

Configure NT to support TCP/IP printing. Add a printer selecting Local Port. Select Add Port and pick LPD. Enter IP address of the JetDirect for the remote print server and RAW as the remote printer. Select a HP deskjet print driver from the list ofavailable drivers, a little trial and error here and all should be well. This assumes that you are using IP on your JetDirect.
