    networking problem

    2 pc with xp both hp brand with realtek nic’s
    straight utp cables to a linksys switch
    ran network setup on both pcs….no conn
    assigned static ip to both…nope
    all protocols, client, file&print, Qos both pcs
    pc 1 can ping 2 but 2 can’t ping 1
    both in same workgroup
    can’t ping either by pc name
    did get pc1 onto pc2 workgroup but says can’t connect may not have permission, all users have permission
    am i missing something simple
    I’m stumped any thoughts would be appreciated, mike

      yes i tried a crossover cable without the switch
      but not with the switch.

      Check if there is the firewall is enabled on both PCs, if so, disable firewalls and try connecting.

      I disabled xp firewall but forgot about the anti-virus software…..I knew i was overthinking it

      With no DNS server, you wont be able to ping by name unless you manualy edit the host file. Make sure both are on the same sub-net, and double check spelling of workgroup name. Make sure both are the same service pack level. And, I have found it helps to create an actual shared folder on each to “trigger” the computers to do a master browser election. Give em a few minutes to connect, and then try to access then from My network Neighbborhood.
