    Networking w/ a dell laptop

    Locked

    by kashmeir63 ·

    Hi,
I have a dell latitude laptop. With a network adapter card. When I’m at work I plug in my rj45 cable to get on the network. What I would like to do for my home and currently have at my home is the following: I have cable modem going to a desktop computer. I would like to make a small wireless network for my home. I’m not sure how to go about this. I would like to add a wireless network card to my latitiude keeping the other network card in there for work. And I know I would have to change my desktop to a wireless card and I would have to also buy a access point.
In theory I think I’ve thought some of this out but I know I’m missing some things. Any help would be appreciated.

You have right idea, all you need is AP with ports or you can buy Microsoft Base station(AP) that comes with port.

      I have Microsoft Base station.
      Here is my setup.

Cable modem connected to Base station and the base station sends our signals to wireless card. This microsoft base station comes with 4 ports, so I have one desktop computer directly connected to the base station port becuase the destop doesn’t have a wireless card, and I have a laptop with wireless card. Works great.

Setup was very easy, I followed the quick setup chart and you can’t go wrong with it. Nice big charts with arrow pointings.

      What you will need.
      1. Wireless card.
      2. Access Point.
      3. Second Profile.

more than likely you have to enter a username and password to log onto your work network, if that is the case when you get home unles your company has you on a VPN or citrix, you will need to create a second profile on your machine that allows you log onto your home network, there are a couple of way to do this the easiest way is to create a new user.

Buy a home router/wireless access point and wireless Pcmcia card from say bestbuy, most of the routers will also have integrated 4 port hubs so that you don’t have to go wireless on your home desktop, some even have print servers also. Just follow the router set up instructions to get your tower and laptop running. Then use the RJ45 NIC on Dell for office. You don’t have to keep both installed in the PCMCIA slots just have both drivers configured.
