New network cant talk to other subnet.

By bijornr ·
I have a new cisco router that will handle a new IP scheme. I need any host with the new IP scheme to talk to the other networks IP scheme. I can ping any device on the "other" ip scheme but cant bring up any network shares or email although I cant ping the email server. Pinging by name and IP address are successful.
Please help or advice.

You may be depending on NetBEUI for your network share information. Because of the naming scheme for NetBEUI, it can't be routed. There are ways around this depending on which OS the computers are using. I'm not clear on whether you can or can't ping your email server, or any errors that you get in the process of sending an email. Listing those might help! :-)

Thanks for the info, Yes I can ping the email server, but cant open email box unles I plug the host into a switch on the lan. 90% of the host in the network are win 2kpro. Does this mean I'll have to check the NETbuie configs on any host on the new subnet?

You want to make sure the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox in the TCP/IP settings/Advanced/WINS tab is checked. The default setting does not always seem to work properly, even though it supposedly enables NetBIOS over TCP/IP also if a DHCP server setting isn't present.

Hope this helps!
