New site connection

By tzutzasialbu ·
Hi folks,

The company just added a new site and this site has different small buildings. We got a DSL connection in one of the offices and we want to connect the other buildings to it and create a WAN with the main office. These secondary buildings have no cabling. These new buildings are across the street from each other. Would wireless be the best solution to connect these small offices to the DSL line? They are 300 ft. away and there are some trees between them.
What would be your suggestion?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Wireless would probably work. Are you going to wire the small buildings from the wireless access point on the building or try to connect the pc's directly to your wireless router. A direct connection probably wouldn't work, distance is too great with walls and everything in the way.

I'd try wireless with standard access points first and see if it works (hint: Staples will take anything back even if it's opened; limited to 14 days for some tech stuff). Really, 300ft isn't all that far even with a few trees in the way.

If that doesn't work, try these from 3com:

They can be quite a bit pricier but only as a one-time cost. Over time they're quite economical, actually. I've used a pair of the indoor ones to link 2 sites downtown Seattle over about a mile. The setup was painless and the security is sufficient, although more is always better if you have a server capable of Radius or something similar.
