Newsletter-to-Browser link problem

by mike_h . Updated 19 years, 3 months ago

I’ve run into a problem that really has me stumped. First, let me say that I am using Windows 98, Internet Explorer 6.0 and Outlook Express 6.

I subscribe to a number of TechRepublic newsletters and spend quite a bit of time browsing through the articles, blogs, discussions, etc. One day last week I had received several new newsletters and was going through them when this problem popped up. After having gone through several newsletters, I opened the next one and when I clicked on a link I got a new IE window with the message “The page cannot be displayed” with “Cannot find server” in the title bar of the new window. I tried copying the link and pasting it into IE with the same result. As a double-check I cut the link down to the basic “http://ct.techrepublic.com.com/” with the same result.

I also tried pasting the link into Firefox 1.5.0.9, Netscape 8.0.4 and Opera 8.02 and it works fine in all three.

Today I used Firefox to go to a link and saved the resulting Web page to my hard drive. I then went back to IE and opened the page from my hard drive with no problem.

My “Add/Remove Programs” doesn’t allow me to uninstall IE6 so I tried reinstalling IE6 over the one that was already there. That seemed to “take” but it didn’t make any difference, it still won’t open the newsletter links. I have some old newsletters from other sources (HP, Adobe, Avaya, MLB, AAA, Microsoft, Vonage, etc.) and those links all work fine.

I’m really more of a “user” than a “fixer” and I’m fresh out of ideas on this. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to attack this problem or has anyone had this problem? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

A big-time Thanks for any help.

Mike
