NFC files not working properly

By marka ·
I just installed Netware 3.12 and configured my Startup.ncf and Autoexec.ncf files as suggested in the book. When I book up I get asked for the server name and internal number as if the startup.ncf did not exist.

NFC files not working properly

Check to see that your disk drivers (in Startup.ncf) are loading properly. If they are not, then the SYS volume will not mount, and the Autoexec.ncf file cannot be found.

A couple of things to check:

1. After you enter your server name and IPX internal address, you'll get the server console prompt. Type VOLUMES to see if SYS is mounted. If it isn't, check that you have properly specified your disk drivers in Startup.ncf (you can still LOAD INSTALL, as there is a copy of Install.nlm on the DOS partition in the \server.312 directory (or whatever you named it when you installed NetWare. Look for a slot number in the load line for the disk driver. If this is specified, remove the SLOT= part of the line and restart NetWare. You should be prompted for a slot number for your disk controller, and the prompt should contain the slot number where the machine thinks the controller resides. Make note of the number, and accept the prompt. If the server loads properly, go back to Startup.ncf and add back the SLOT= with the correct slot number.

2. If SYS is mounted, check the Autoexec.ncf file to make sure that the syntax for the lines for File Server Name and Internal IPX address is correct.

Let me know how you made out.

As well as all the suggestions made by barry (all of which I agree with) ensure that your startup.ncf file is in the same directory on the DOS partition as server.exe (probably \server.312) otherwise it will not execute.
