No cdrom after installing Windows ME

By star33killer ·
I reformatted my hard drive. Loaded Win ME but no cdroms were showing. Went out and bought new hard drive. Same thing. It recognizes the roms but thats it. Is it ME or me? Help, Trish

Can you see the CDROM in the BIOS and/or on POST? Does the CD actually spin when you insert it, or does the light on the CDR stay orange? You probably need to reinstall the cd-rom drivers.

I am assuming that it is a new cd rom you bought and that it is the hard drive that it see's. Please check the cable from the back of the cd rom to the motherboard sometimes they can pull out just enough on the bottom to not make contact but not enough that is is easy to detect. Also make sure that the red line or pin one goes to pin one on the motherboard and the cd rom.

Check if Windows can recognize/detect it by running Add/Remove Hardware wizard, if not go through the steps presented by the wizard to add the cd rom manually. Windows will present you with the list of manufacturer and drivers available, if your cdrom does not appear on the list, depending on the manufacturer of your cdrom, download the appropriate drivers from the manufacturers website.

Hope this helps.

If using a Win98 startup disk you will have the cd-rom drivers on the disk

Boot the machine up and when startup screen appears, press the designated key to enter BIOS setup, set the hard drive configuration to Auto, then make sure that ide controllers are set to Enabled

You will not see the drive or cd-rom if both are set as masters on the primary

You can manually install the controller drivers from the Add New Hardware wizard, for the onscreen instructions by selecting to manually pick the hardware from list.

Check the cables to insure they are set on the back of the drives correctly,Pin 1 seated correctly

Check the Pin configuration if using the primary controller for the hard disk and cd-rom,to master and slave

You need t odownload and install the drivers for the IDE controller and the CD drive which is connected to that will come right up.
