    No power when cd rom is plugged in

    With a brand new power supply (which I first thought was the problem) the computer has no power at all when I hit the power switch. When I unplugged the power connector to the cd rom, the computer boots up find. I switched cd roms and cable and the same problem exists. Could this be my IDE controller?

      The IDE may be causing the problem,do you have the jumpers on the cd set as a slave and also depending on your system you may have to
      update the bios.Run your diagnostic through the device manager and sheck the controllers and see if they are operating properly.

      It still could be the new power supply. Every component added to the system draws more current; most PS have a current overlimit circuit that turns it off when the current is too great. If the PS is defective, this can happen prematurely. Removing almost ANY component can then drop the current draw to a safe range. Since you used a different CD with the same results it isn’t the CD. What does attaching the CD while unplugging the hard drive do? The HD usually draws more. If the computer then boots with the CD plugged in, suspect that the PS is bad OR not large enough for your system. Second choice would be that some other component or card is bad and drawing excessive power – remove everything but video card and HD, then start adding components back in order of importance. If the computer doesn’t power up with CD and no HD, suspect controller or motherboard problem.

      #2 is good answer but add that the ide cable should be plugged so the red stripe is on the side of the power connector.

      Answer 3 is accurate 95% of the time. There are some CDROM drives we have carried, that do not follow this standard. The thing to remember is that the stripe on the IDE cable should go to pin 1 on the drives IDE connector. Having the connection backwards frequently does cause power failure problems as in your scenario.

      What you may try doing is attaching the CD Rom to the same cable as your hard drive in a master/slave configuration. This will will tell you if it is the controller or not.
